Brown’s The Tall Tale in American Folklore and Literature. The review begins with an examination of Brown’s thesis. Brown argues that the tall tale in American literature is a genre concerned with boundaries between narrator and audience, and between the society and the tale. Brown argues that the tall tale defines and unifies groups and helps groups deal with difficult environments through laughter. This book review examines Brown’s thesis and arguments, and concludes that although Brown’s approach is novel, Brown overlooks alternate readings of the tall tales and avoids discussing the violence that is prevalent in many of these narratives.
