39. 122 Balkans.

This paper discusses the Balkans. The Turks' guiding principle was to raid, war against and make life miserable to the Christians in the interest of Islam. They belonged to the Byzantine Empire, the capital of which was Constantinople, the apple of the eye of the Turks, then headed by the prophet Muhammad. But it was not until the rule of Muhammad the Conqueror that this great ghazi or conquest was carried out. In 1453, Muhammad and his troops bombed the city walls of Constantinople for months, and having been so badly damaged, it did not take the Turks a day to capture it and destroy the last bit of it. Thus was how the misery of its Christian inhabitants, begun by the brutal siege, continued.

41. 249 Palestrina and the Counter-Reformation.

This paper is written on the greatest composer of all times - Palestrina. Palestrina, thought by many to be the greatest composer of all time, was born in Palestrina in 1514 or 1515 according to Baini, Riemann, and others. According to Haberi, he died in February 2, 1594 in Rome, though his early history is virtually unknown. A manuscript in the Vatican relates that a young Palestrina sang in the streets of Rome while offering for sale the products of his parent's farm. On such occasion, he was heard by the choirmaster of Santa Maria Maggiore, who was impressed with the boy's beautiful voice. He pronounced his musical talent and educated him musically. He was a pupil of Mallapert and Firmin Lebel at St. Maria Maggiore, Rome, where he was a choirboy from at least 1544. In 1547, he married Lucrezia Gloria; they had three children.

This three-page undergraduate essay examines the nature and character of human society during the Paleolithic Age. The author discusses how the institutions and technology of Paleolithic peoples contributed to future civilization, and notes that their hunger for practical knowledge and instinct for endless invention and innovation are perhaps the greatest legacies they left for future civilization, because these traits were inherited by succeeding generations. Like our Paleolithic ancestors, we are never satisfied with the status quo and are always searching for new ways to improve their lives.
